When the Grand Hôpital de Charleroi in Belgium planned the expansion of its hospital, the goal was clear: to modernize the medication workflow by adopting advanced, reliable, and easily scalable automation solutions. The project, launched in 2021, is now a benchmark case for efficiency, modularity, and centralized therapy management.
Two design phases, one shared vision
The hospital initially operated in a smaller facility at the St. Thérèse site, which became the perfect foundation for launching a pilot project in the first phase. The gradual adoption of automation solutions made it possible to test processes, train staff, and evaluate future integration into the hospital’s new location.
Thanks to Sinteco’s great flexibility, a distinctive element of our approach, we delivered a fully modular solution, ideal for a multi-step development path.
This allowed the hospital to:
- Start the project with a smaller but fully functioning system at the existing site
- Test the technology
- Train staff in advance
- Relocate the entire automation to the new facility without difficulties
A fully centralized medication workflow
The second phase of the project, dedicated to the new building, enabled coverage of the full capacity of the Grand Hôpital de Charleroi, keeping the existing machines and integrating new ones to ensure uniformity and operational continuity between the initial site and the new site.
With the transition to the new, large Viviers hospital, automation reached its full expansion. The result: a smooth transition with no operational interruptions.
The medication workflow is now 100% centralized, managed through high-performance technologies and optimized to support up to 900 beds.
The technology adopted: Calypso and Pegasus
At the core of the project are the solutions installed directly inside the hospital pharmacy:
- 2 Calypso OS Twist
- 1 Calypso Easy
- 6 Pegasus Stick
These technologies enable automated, centralized, and precise medication management, including packaging and therapy preparation, entirely carried out within the pharmacy.
Results
The hospital achieved its goal of automated and modern management of all medications for the total 900 beds. The solution provided:
